Rev. Dr. John N. Alegu
The Rev. John Nte Alegu, PhD(JP), the current President of the Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN), was born on 2nd October 1960 in Nkalafor Echara, Ikwo LGA, Ebonyi State. Dr. Alegu has combined pastoral devotion with academic excellence throughout his lifelong pastoral ministry and academic career. His pastoral journey began in 1976, when he pastored Okpotegu Local Church in Ikwo LGA of Ebonyi State as lay preacher. In pursuit of ministerial training, he gained admission into then Central Bible College and Institute (CBC&I), now Assemblies of God Divinity School (AGDSN) in 1977 and graduated in 1979. With passion for academic excellence, he proceeded to West Africa Advanced School of Theological (WAST), Lome Togo where he earned his B.A. Degree in Bible/Theology in 1984. His outstanding performances led to his appointment as a Seminary Lecturer in 1987 at Eastern Bible College (EBC) Ogoja, Cross Rivers State where he served as a Lecturer/Bursar for twelve (12) years. Dr. Alegu further advanced academically by obtaining a Master’s degree in Christian Education from Evangel Theological Seminary (ETS), Jos in 1995 where he later served as a Lecturer/Registrar. He gained admission for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from Ebonyi State University, where he graduated as the “Best student” in the Faculty of Education in 2006. His quest for knowledge and academic potential earned him admission into a concurrent second Master’s Degree (M.Ed)/Ph.D program, which culminated in his capping of M.Ed/Ph.D in 2015. As an advocate of academic excellence, Dr. Alegu served as Vice President of Academics in three Assemblies of God Seminaries: the Nigerian Advanced School of Theology (NAST) in Edo State, Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS) in Rivers State, and Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN) in Abia State, for twenty-one year (2002-2023), During this time, he aligned the academic programs of Nigerian Advanced School of Theology (NAST), Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS), Rivers State, and Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN) with global standards, fostering holistic student development and creating an outstanding learning environment. In 2017, he was appointed for a six month service as an Acting President of Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS), Rivers State. Beyond administration, Dr. Alegu also contributed significantly to various educational bodies and has served as a member of Curriculum Upgrading Committee of Assemblies of God Seminaries and a member of B.Th Curriculum Development Team of Evangel University, Akaeze, Ebonyi State. Dr. Alegu’s passion for capacity building is evident in his supervision of numerous undergraduate projects and postgraduate theses, guiding students who have gone on to make noble contributions in pastoral ministry and academia. He is a prolific writer, having authored sixteen (16) books and co-authored four (4) others, including revised editions. Some of his works are used in seminaries and secular universities, with some in the process of being translated into Hausa and French languages, expanding their impact in secular and sacred education globally. Dr. Alegu has served in all the above-mentioned schools as a member of Board of Administration and as a Secretary in the Board of Governing Council, advocating Christ-centered, transformative theological education. His services extended to the Christian Pilgrim Welfare Board, Ebonyi State, where he was repeatedly recognized, including receiving the honor of Best Bus Captain (Leader) in Israel. In 2024, Dr. Alegu was appointed the President of the Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN, his alma mater where he is serving with unwavering dedication, upholding the values of excellence, innovation, and spiritual transformation in pastoral education. As Chief Executive Officer of the Seminary, the President is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the institution, providing oversight of all administrative, fiscal, and personnel functions. He guides human resources, facilities, policies, and strategic initiatives to ensure the Seminary’s academic and administrative goals are met, and that the resources necessary for institutional growth and excellence are effectively mobilized.
