About Us

The Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN), located in Old Umuahia, Abia State, stands as a beacon of theological education, spiritual growth, and leadership development in Nigeria. Its roots trace back to the early days of Assemblies of God Nigeria, when the need for a dedicated institution to train pastors, missionaries, and church leaders became increasingly evident.

It was founded in 1940 at an Assemblies of God Old Umuahia church building by the Rev. Dr. W.L. Shirer, an American missionary. Thereafter, the Rev. Dr. Everett L. Philips, also an American missionary to Nigeria, took over its leadership in February of the same year. The school was later relocated to its permanent site at Umueledi Community, Old Umuahia, Abia State Nigeria in 1941. Its initial name was Central Bible College and Institute (CBC&I), later changed to Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria (AGDSN) in 1984 as a degree awarding institution. The Rev. Dr. Raphael Cimino took over the headship of the school before the Rev. Dr. James Maccauley served as the last expatriate missionary and head of the school.

AGDSN emerged as a response to the growing demand for biblically sound and doctrinally grounded ministers to serve the Assemblies of God Church and beyond. The school was established with the vision of equipping men and women for effective ministry, rooted in the principles of Pentecostal faith and practice.

Modernization

The school embarked on technological advancements with acquisition of many sets of computer for its E-library resource center for research purpose. Courtesy of Africa’s Hope Foundation, the school took delivery of two flash drives that contain eleven thousand e-books of broad-based theological, secular and humanity topics. In addition, more than two thousand books for the main library were also received for research purpose from the Africa’s Hope in 2025.

A modern conference hall was constructed and equipped for the Faculty, the Board of Administration, and the Board of Governors’ meeting. In addition, for students and teachers to connect and collaborate in brainstorming sessions for bonding activities. Here the final year students have their academic defense and seminar presentations.

The school also adopted the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for its Affiliate Programme. A curriculum framework introduced by the National University Commission (NUC) to guide Nigerian Universities in delivering education that is modern, globally competitive, and tailored to the needs of society. The CCMAS is the new curriculum that replaces the older Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) which emphasizes a split structure: 70% core content provided by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and 30% customizable content designed by individual universities, AGDSN inclusive.

In 2021, the Education Department, Assemblies of God Nigeria came up with a revised curricular activities for its theological schools and seminary programmes at Diploma, Degree and Masters to produce graduates with practical ministry skills while addressing both spiritual and community challenges. The school also integrated modern teaching methods and resources into its curricular activities to better prepare students for ministry in a rapidly changing world.

Over the year, AGDSN has trained thousands of pastors, evangelists, and church leaders who have gone on to serve in various capacities within Assemblies of God Nigeria and other Christian denominations. The school’s graduates are known for their unwavering commitment to the gospel, their deep understanding of scripture, and their passion for spreading the gospel of Christ to the end of the earth.

Core Values and Legacy

At its heart, AGDSN is guided by the core values of faith, integrity, excellence, and service. These principles have shaped the institution’s mission and continue to inspire its efforts to nurture spiritually mature, academically competent, and missionally focused leaders.

Looking Ahead

As AGDSN moves into the future, it remains committed to its founding vision while adapting to the challenges and opportunities of contemporal ministry. The school continues to expand its programmes, strengthen its faculty, and invest in infrastructure to ensure that it remains a leading institution for both theological and tertiary education in Nigeria and beyond. Today, the Assemblies of God Divinity School of Nigeria is not just a place of learning, but a community of faith, where students are transformed into vessels of God’s glory, ready to impact the world for Christ.

Our Core Leaders

At the AGDSN, our core leaders are more than educators—they are passionate mentors, seasoned ministers, and devoted servants of Christ, handpicked to guide students toward spiritual maturity and godly influence. Rooted in the institute's core values of being Bible-based, Christ-centred, and committed to servant leadership, our faculty embodies the philosophy of integrating Christian beliefs with practical knowledge to develop innovative, God-dependent leaders.
